Entrevistamos a Vass, el owner de 'The Comfort’

Hola Vass, es un placer saludarte desde Mixmag España. Estamos muy contentos de tener la oportunidad de hablar contigo. Recientemente, has captado la atención de muchos promotores de fiestas, así como de clubbers y artistas de todo el mundo. Nos gustaría saber más sobre ti y tu carrera artística.

¿Dónde creciste y cómo comenzaste en la música electrónica?

Hola a todos, es un placer estar aquí. Crecí en Rumania, específicamente en Transilvania, una región con una notable minoría húngara, de la cual forma parte mi familia. Mi trayectoria musical comenzó con el hip-hop, y mi primera exposición a la música electrónica fue en 2005, cuando mi abuela regresó de visitar a mi tío en Estados Unidos con un reproductor de CD Sony Discman y el álbum "Music Instructor - Electro City". Este álbum de electro breaky sigue siendo uno de mis favoritos y abrió la puerta a mi curiosidad por la música electrónica. Crecí en una ciudad pequeña sin clubes de música electrónica, así que me volqué a internet y pasé mucho tiempo en YouTube. A los 16 años, comencé a viajar a otras ciudades, descubriendo beats repetitivos de artistas como Tania Vulcano, Richie Hawtin y Luciano, y explorándolos intensamente en línea. Más tarde, me mudé a Cluj-Napoca para la universidad, pero pronto me di cuenta de que no era mi pasión. Le dije a mis padres que quería mudarme a Ibiza. No fue la conversación más fácil, pero eventualmente me apoyaron, y pasé una temporada allí antes de mudarme a Londres.

¿Cuáles han sido y son tus principales influencias?

Un tiempo después de llegar a Londres, terminé en este lugar en Seven Sisters (donde más tarde me mudé), pero lo más importante es que aquí descubrí los discos. En este punto, ya tenía una pequeña consola digital, que me deshice de inmediato y empecé a ahorrar para comprar tocadiscos y una mesa de mezclas adecuada y empecé a comprar discos. Puedo decir fácilmente que mi mayor influencia para empezar a tocar discos y el DJ al que más admiro es Greg, uno de mis primeros amigos en Londres y uno de los DJs más discretos y geniales que aún existen. Mi primera exposición a la "escena de la música electrónica underground" fue a través de Undersound, que me influenció mucho. Luego empecé a asistir a Cartulis y Art of Dark. Estas tres fiestas moldearon significativamente mis inicios como artista, y no solo eso, a través de ellas formé amistades duraderas, conocí a personas que ahora considero familia y continúo aprendiendo y admirando.

¿Qué nos puedes contar sobre tu sello discográfico, The Comfort?

Es algo que me hace muy feliz, lo he estado planeando desde hace mucho tiempo y finalmente el año pasado tomó vida. Empezó con uno de mis discos favoritos de todos los tiempos, 4 pistas de Dj Lo-Tek alias Sohrab que han sido muy queridas para mí. Dirigir un sello es algo que disfruto mucho, va de la mano con mi forma de buscar discos para tocar, busco productores para el sello. Una de las mejores partes es que me da la oportunidad de conocer a muchos artistas talentosos y personalidades increíbles que realmente me inspiran mucho, haciendo amigos en la vida real a medida que pasa el tiempo. Además, encuentro una gran satisfacción en proporcionar bandas sonoras para noches de club a través de la música que he curado, incluso si no estoy físicamente presente.

Nos encantaría que nos recomendaras 4 productores underground que merecen mención o cuyas pistas siempre están en tus sets.

Es un poco difícil mencionar solo 4, pero diría que Rolando Simmons es una de mis mayores inspiraciones en cuanto a estética sonora, aunque no sea música de club directamente, está omnipresente en mis mezclas/sets desde siempre. Las producciones de Sohrab también siempre han añadido una vibra extra a mi maleta, y recientemente mis productores favoritos son, sin duda, Noboot y Terraflow, ambos extremadamente talentosos. PD: La actuación en directo de Rolando en Houghton fue el punto culminante del festival para mí.

¿Cómo era la escena en Rumania y qué destacarías de ella? ¿Y qué nos puedes contar sobre la escena en Londres?

Nunca estuve involucrado con la escena rumana, hasta hace muy poco. Empecé en la música en Londres, así que nunca estuve en ningún tipo de escena de minimal, microhouse, pero toqué algunas veces en Cluj, Tirgu-Mures y más recientemente toqué en Red Dot Community cerca de Cluj y debo decir que tuve un tiempo increíble, es un evento muy especial y me fui muy impresionado y feliz al respecto, y definitivamente es mi punto destacado. En cuanto a la escena de Londres, aunque odio usar el término "mejor", debo decir que es la mejor que he experimentado. La combinación de Fold y Starlane y la pista de baile educada lleva todo al siguiente nivel, y debo decir que los anteriores son mi inspiración hoy en día. Cavo diferente música para "Fold", diferente música para "Starlane". Es bastante obvio que estoy muy enamorado de Londres y de la escena londinense y nunca de la pista de baile de Londres. Además, cada fin de semana hay algo de calidad sucediendo, incluso iría tan lejos como para decir que cada día del fin de semana, algo que no es fácil de encontrar en ningún otro lugar.

¿Qué tiendas de discos satisfacen mejor tus necesidades musicales?

Ninguna, y no quiero sonar presumido, pero al final ir a una tienda de discos se trata de suerte, y hoy en día estoy haciendo una búsqueda dirigida, estoy buscando un ritmo específico, cierta vibra, etc. Por eso, para mí, Discogs es mi lugar número uno para buscar. Por supuesto, me encanta visitar las tiendas donde sea que esté, y también llevo las tiendas de Londres en rotación, pero no es mi fuente principal.

¿Cómo ves la escena española hoy en día? ¿Qué destacarías especialmente?

No puedo hablar mucho sobre la escena española, solo he tocado en Barcelona algunas veces, una ciudad que amo y tengo muchos buenos amigos y recuerdos, aparte de esto solo he escuchado cosas buenas sobre muchos festivales y fiestas, pero nunca tuve el honor de participar. Si hay algo que destacar según mis experiencias sería definitivamente el equipo de Siku y la semana de Off Sonar, que es especial por reunir a todos de todos los rincones del mundo.

Hello Vass, It's a pleasure to greet you from Mixmag Spain. We are very happy to have the chance to chat with you. Recently, you have captured the attention of many party promoters, as well as clubbers and artists from around the world. We would like to know more about you and your artistic career.

Where did you grow up and how did you start in electronic music?

Hello everyone, it's a pleasure to be here. I was raised in Romania, specifically in Transylvania, a region with a notable Hungarian minority, of which my family is a part. My musical journey started with hip-hop, and my first exposure to electronic music came in 2005 when my grandmother returned from visiting my uncle in the USA with a Sony Discman CD-player and the album “Music Instructor - Electro City.” This breaky electro album remains one of my favorites and opened the door to my curiosity about electronic music.Growing up in a small city with no electronic music clubs, I turned to the internet and spent a lot of time on YouTube. At 16, I started traveling to other cities, discovering repetitive beats from artists like Tania Vulcano, Richie Hawtin, and Luciano, and intensively explored them online. Later, I moved to Cluj-Napoca for university, but soon realized it wasn't my passion. I told my parents I wanted to move to Ibiza. It wasn't the smoothest conversation, but they eventually supported me, and I spent a season there before moving to London.

What have been and are your main influences?

A little while after my arrival in London I ended up at this warehouse place in Seven Sisters (to where later on ended up moving), but importantly there is were I discovered records. At this point I already had a little digital console, which I got rid of straight away and started saving up for turntables and proper mixer and started buying records. I can easily say my number one influence starting to play records and the dj I looked up the most is Greg, one of my first friends in London and one of the most lowkey and cool djs around still. My first exposure to the "underground electronic music scene" came through Undersound, which heavily influenced me. I then started attending to Cartulis and Art of Dark. These three parties significantly shaped my beginnings as an artist, and not just, through them, I formed lasting friendships, meeting people I now consider family and continue to learn from and admire.


What can you tell us about your record label, The Comfort?

Is something that is making me very happy, I’ve been planning it since very long time and finally last year took life, started with one of my favorite records ever, 4 tracks from Dj Lo-Tek aka Sohrab that have been very dear to me. Running a label is something that I enjoy very much, goes hand in hand with my way of digging for records to play, I dig for producers for the label. One of the best parts is that it gives me to opportunity to meet so many talented artists and amazing personalities that actually inspire me so much, making more and more real life friends as time goes by. Additionally, I find great satisfaction in providing soundtracks for club nights through music I've curated, even if I'm not physically there.

We would love for you to recommend 4 underground producers who deserve mention or whose tracks are always in your sets.


Is a bit difficult to mention only 4, but I would say Rolando Simmons is one of my biggest inspirations sound aesthetic wise, even tho is not directly club music but is omnipresent in my mixes/sets since forever. Sohrab’s productions as well always added extra vibe to my bag, and recently my most favorite producers are by far Noboot and Terraflow, both of them extremely talented. PS: Rolando’s live set at Houghton was the highlight of the festival for me.

What was the scene like in Romania and what would you highlight about it? And what can you tell us about the scene in London?

I was never involved with Romanian scene, until very recently. I started music in London so I was never into any sort of minimal, micro house scene, but I played few times in Cluj, Tirgu-Mures and most recently I played at Red Dot Community near Cluj and must say I had an amazing time, is a very special event and I left very impressed and happy about it, and is definitely my highlight. As per London scene, even tho I hate to use the term “best”, but I must say is best I ever experienced. The combination of Fold and Starlane and the educated dancefloor takes everything to the next level, and must say the above are my inspiration nowadays. I dig different music for “Fold”, different music for “Starlane”. Quite obvious that I am very much in love with London and the London scene and never the less of London dancefloor. In addition, there is every weekend something quality going on, I would even go so far as every day of the weekend, something that is not easy to find anywhere around.


Which record shops best meet your musical needs?

None, and I don’t want to sound a snub but going to a record shop in the end is all about luck, and nowadays I am doing targeted digging, I am looking for specific groove, certain vibe, etc etc, so for me discogs is my number one place to dig. Of course I love visiting the shops wherever I am, and I also take London shops on rotation too, but is not my main source.

How do you see the Spanish scene today? What would you highlight the most?

I cannot speak about the Spanish scene too much, I’ve only played in Barcelona few times, a city which I love and have many good friends and memories, other than this I only heard good things about many festivals and parties around but never had the honor to take part. If there is something to highlight up to my experiences would be definitely the Siku crew, and the Off Sonar week, which is special for meeting everyone from all the corners of the world.
